I think the stories of this are just a tad overblown. I’m in the process of downloading the file to check it out, but here’s a list of the files contained in that 2.8GB:

    facebook-f.last-withcount.txt
    facebook-first.l-withcount.txt
    facebook-firstnames-withcount.txt
    facebook-lastnames-withcount.txt
    facebook-names-original.txt
    facebook-names-unique.txt
    facebook-names-withcount.txt
    facebook-urls.txt

So you have 100 million peoples names, and links to their profiles on facebook. Yawn. There is no profile information contained in any of these files that I can see (from the names at least).

For those who don’t see the point of the torrent: “Now what is left is generating passwords from the names (like your jsmith and smith) and trying these out to access the accounts. With that amount of data you will have many hits.” (taken straight from a commentator on Skull Security. O boy…

Probably the same people who put their cell phones, addresses, and email addresses on their page….WHY do people do that?!

So what is it a bunch of HTML files and images so you can see their profiles without being online? Seems pretty dumb and pointless to me. Its gotta be hard to search for things like that, and I bet it will take a long time for you to index it to make it something useful.

I bet everyone in here will download it just to see if there own profile made it in the pack. I wonder how they are named? 1, 2, 3, etc? by name? I can’t see myself going through all of these profiles.

Hmm. Facebook tests Instant Account Destruction [gizmodo.com] and now this? Coincidence? I think not! Facebook is determined to make sure that your data lives forever whether you like it or not!

On the other hand, if Google gets this, it would make it easier to migrate to their new facebook rival product currently in development: [gizmodo.com] You and your friends would already be on there once the service goes live. Genius!

If anyone downloads this.. they should check and see if I’m in that database. I deleted my profile about 2 weeks ago, just wondering if my info is still on there.

It still amazes me that people type anything into a text box on the web and hit submit with the assumption of privacy.

The Internet was designed to share information, that was it’s purpose, to share information efficiently and resiliently. Pretty much all security and privacy measures built into it since then are hacks, and work as effectively. Maybe I’m just old-school, one of my first jobs was managing CTOS system networks and a Gopher tcp/ip presence, but I’ve never assumed anything I put out here is private.

I don’t put crap on my Facebook that people would like to know. My statuses consist of “I’m bored”, ” brb playin drums”, and “OMG SO ****ING BORED”, so I have nothing to worry about.

So it’s public information, and it was “leaked” to the public. What am I missing here? Is this page on Gizmodo going to be leaked to a torrent site too? Oh nos!
