Popular Android Twitter app Twidroid has been bought up—with Idealab’s TweetUp throwing money we didn’t realise it had in its direction. There’s a rather interesting fact behind the app’s sudden name change from Twidroid to Twidroyd, too—it’s to fend off any possible legal action from Lucas Films, which TweetUp says is the trademark owner of the term “droid.” [Twidroyd] More »

@Hearthatvoiceagain: Most of them don’t make enough money to make them worth suing. Twidroid does.

@Paresh Patel:
[phones.verizonwireless.com]
on the bottom:
“DROID is a trademark of Lucasfilm Ltd. and its related companies. Used under license. ”
also, [www.android.com] state that
“Any name with ‘Android’ alone may not be used in a name without permission. Any name with ‘Droid’ alone may not be used in a name.”

To change the name because of Lucasfilm is stupid. there are loads of Apps that have droid in the title, but it is because of ANDROID. If Lucasfilm went after all of them all it would get is a shitload of bad publicity.

@Paresh Patel: If you look at anything relating to the Droid line of phones, Verizon puts a note in the fine print that “Droid is a trademark of Lucasfilm”. I’m guessing that means they have permission.
It’s a stupid thing to be able to trademark though. I’m going to trademark “Giz” and sue this website.
Dmoralize
Verizon are fucked then.
