    Neat!

    That video could have been 30 seconds though. I scanned forward to see if he throws a car or anything, and he doesn’t.

    @FordGTGuy: In the Haloverse…yes, but for the real world a suit that looks just like that has relatively ok bulletproofing and HUD functionality could probably be made today. Ya know, for the fanboys.

    Kill two birds with one stone: remove all the frame struts and replace them with armor pieces that close around their respective body parts, and presto! A cool looking, armored, structurally sound exo-suit like we all dream about. Therefore less equipment for our soldiers to lug around in the sand, and an outfit that will make the terrorists shit themselves when the fight comes.

    @Bluecold:

    We couldn’t use MJLONIR as normal humans that tried it in the novel smashes their bones from the amount of force the armor would move with. Also the armor moved from commands for the wearers brain.

    They never really showed the guy running. Kind of pointless to carry guns when you can only move so slowly that you’re a sitting duck. Also, are they creating safeguards so that when the soldier falls forward he is not going to be crushed by 200lbs of equipment? I don’t think the average wrists can withstand that kind of weight on a fall.

    @Bluecold: That would be a sight to see and the tech is there to make a bulletproof armor like that.

    @Maave: by the fact that they said “testing will also assess how quickly users learn to use the HULC system” I don’t think it’s a piece of cake… but if it comes with ice cream and hot brownies I’m willing to bet it can become useful for those heavy loads… except the part where I’m wondering if this wouldn’t hinder soldiers ability to get out of the way or run away quickly… unless these are the guys that are going to be waaaaay in the back just carrying crap for the rest of the team…

    It wasn’t too long ago (or maybe still) that we couldn’t even give all of our guys proper kevlar. I don’t see this being wide-spread in the military any time soon.

    Think of the civilian applications! One step closer to heavy loader technology, a la “Aliens” or “Avatar”. War really does drive innovation. Sad, but true.

    When do we get the one that flies and can rip tanks apart with its bare mechanical hands?

    Honestly its cool that that leg exo skeleton helps carry loads, but people won’t really be interested until an armored soldier suit is ready for action.

    Am I the only one who loses respect for a product when they release a demo video with cheesy guitar rifts and high school after effects editing, such as dropping the frame rate to 2 fps.

    “HULC, or Human Universal Load Carrier”

    I honestly think that if or when this tech winds up being embedded into the soliders suit armor and is applied to the arms as well that power armor or ‘super’ armor might be a better name given that it would be protective gear which amplifies said wearers capabilities. Also, if they start adding all their other gear to this device, it’ll be more than just a load carrier.

    of course names are all but meaningless, and this is probably one of the more pointless posts i’ve done in a while. Still though…I just can’t stop thinking about the day when such suits go from theoretical and trails like it is now, to commonplace.

    also…did anyone else have problems playing the video? I could only get it to properly play directly on wired’s site.
