Question of the Day: How Much Wireless Data Do You Actually Use? [Qotd]

Jun

AT&T has killed off its unlimited data plan, which seems really terrible for consumers. But then I checked my actual data usage and found it to be much lower than I expected, which will end up saving me $15/month. More »

I have wireless just about everywhere i go, so most of my usage ends up trough that. However, I still use the tethering, and i’m not shy about using the 3g and i’ve yet to go over 500mb. In canada such wonders as this “unlimited data plan” you speak of don’t exist. I managed to get in wit Rogers on a promotional rate where I get 6Gb a month. At first I was worried, but i’ve been watching my bills and it’s never gotten out of control. I suspect that if I wasn’t drenched in WiFi it might be a different story.

Am I missing something or has unlimited data not always been included with every iPhone plan?

I stream videos from my home computer, listen to the radio, get all my e-mail and browse the web all day and haven’t broken 1gig yet.

Can someone please help me understand AT&T’s incentive for tiered data pricing? Assuming most people sign up for the 2gb/$25 a month option, wouldn’t they actually end up losing money? Especially considering the statistic that “98% of customers use under 2gb a month”.

    What’s the catch??!?!

I pulled up a few statements and I too was surprised to see how little data I actually use. I have averaged just under 250mb for the past three months, which means under the New Data Plus plan I’ll only be paying $18.75. Am I missing something here or is the average-to-heavy user actually going to see some savings?

@Kaiser-Machead: I use 200-400, but does this count what you use on wifi? If so, is there a way to tell what you use on 3G only?

All the people answering over 2.5 gb, are you sure you just don’t have a little data envy :P I seriously can’t believe 20% of readers here do more than 2.5GB on a phone..Unless they are tethering maybe…

With my N900 on AT&T (which means EDGE data rates) I have done over 600MB for the past 3 months, breaking 750MB in April.

As it stands I’m on their old $15/mo data plan, which if I changed the plan and paid the same I’d be getting boned hard.

I suppose I should be glad I’m not using 3G, I’d probably tear through the 2GB. Maybe it’s time to look into T-Mobile…

Including tethering on my iPhone, well over 2GB. Prior to that, 200-400MB

One thing that is pissing me off about how they are describing these new plans is when they say “these new plans will also have access to AT&T Hotspots.” Every iPhone already has access to those, so this is nothing new for current users if they decide to switch data plans…

On mum’s line: 70 MB a month. One month she was down to a lowly 6 MB.

    … on an iPhone.

My line: Anywhere from 190 to 400 MB. Looks like I’m stuck with the DataPro package.

At least it’s $25 cheaper now for us on our already expensive bill. One thing, though…

… as much as this gets smartphones into more people’s hands… it’s getting smartphones into more people’s hands that don’t NEED them.

The day I see another kid walking around with a Tilt2 other than myself I’m smacking them upside the head.

Is there an app that will track your bandwidth use and burn up whatever is left on your plan at the end of the month? Might as well use every byte you’ve paid for…

what is with the 1.5 to 2.5. Would have made more sense to do 1.5 to 2.0 and 2.0+ than you will know exactly what percentage of people go over the data cap.

I’ll be holding on to my unlimited data with a death vice. I use approximately .5 – 1.5 GB each month because I commute by bus/train 1-2 hours each day. A lot of my web browsing, news reading, game playing, video streaming, etc is all done on my phone to kill time on my way to work.

I tether my phone and watch Netflix and Hulu, so I go way over 2GB every month.

Without any tethering and just using pandora, light web surfing and email, I use about 1GB/mo. (I get a hell of a lot of email FWIW)

Don’t know whats wrong with the left side of the chart (i guess AT&T didn’t think they would ever need to make the chart so big)

In 9 months of owning an iPhone 3GS, I’ve received 24.3GB of data, and sent 867MB. Unlimited plan no tethering.

So far, I’ve used about 1.5GB(term is up on June 10). Amount of use has spiked massively though since getting Froyo and flash with it(I’ve usually used 1.0 – 1.3 GB total in previous months).

I use a little less then 1GB, but once 4.0 comes out and I can play Pandora and other stuff in the background (not to mention video calls on the iPhone 4, if we are able to do it over 3G) I will wonder how much data I will use. I think I’ll go a month or 2 still on the $30 plan, then see what I’m using and go from there.

The problem for me isn’t current usage, which is around 500mb/month, but future usage now that video chat is coming and streaming sites like Hulu are about to release their mobile applications.

Last month I used 2.2 GB of data on the Sprint network.

I stream internet radio quite a bit, so it is pretty easy to rack up data pretty quick.

What people are using now isn’t the point. The bigger threat is that this is going to be the standard going forward, and when LTE rolls out it’ll be dead easy to blow through 2gb while sitting on the toilet. Do you really think AT&T is going to suddenly lower prices when LTE rolls out?

You asked about wireless data, you didn’t mention WiFi or 3G.

I know the article is clear, but still you didn’t mention so I answered based on my WiFi usage.

I keep track of this fairly well. It’s very easy for me to rack up 2-2.5 gigs a month.

I selected 200-400. If I was allowed to buy any size songs from iTunes OTA, it would probably be way more than that.

What worries me most is that content is not getting any smaller. Bandwidth capabilities are getting bigger (4g/wimax).

Data capping may not be a huge deal for anyone now, but it will be very very soon.

Just think about how now at home you can stream HD movies. This was unthinkable a few years ago.

I’m right around 2.5 this month. A lot of that is from podcasts that I let download over 3g instead of just downloading them when I am connected to wifi at home.
