Google Voice clever trick number 4 does not work anymore. On January 18th, 2010 it was shut down due to some Terms of Service issues either from its users or Google itself. At any rate, GVXMPP does not exist anymore, and that is the reason for OpenDNS’s “Hmm, gvxmpp.com isn’t loading right now.” server failure message.

What’s the deal with GVXMPP? How do you set up your chat client (I use pidgin) with google voice?

If only Google Voice would let me send the occasional fax, I could get rid of my ancient fax machine forever. I wish I knew why Google won’t allow that. You could fax straight from Google Documents.

Another tip: Use it for gated communities. I lived in a gated community in Atlanta for a while, and I was able to use my google voice account for the gate, since I could get a local number and didn’t have to change my cell phone number. Have to mess with the settings a bit, but nice if you need it.

@Andrew Mussey: I can’t register either. I got a verification number once, which, after I entered it on their website, was apparently ‘invalid’ I tried using my GV number, and never got the text. Now I get the same error you were getting. Frak me in the beard.

I’m having trouble getting to GVXMPP’s site. Anybody else?

Last post on their twitter page was on Jan 19th! Not looking good.

I love using my GV number for craigslist, etc. I once had some guy who missed out on my item and he was calling me leaving pissy messages. I simply set GV to give the “we’re sorry, the number you dialed is disconnected” message.

    I win.

Anyone else try it in the last two or three days?

GVXMPP is dead as a doorknob as far as I can tell. Website is down, Twitter was last updated in January.

    5. Upgrade Your Cellphone Voice Plan to Unlimited

This is against all providers’ terms of service, and at the very least they will remove GV from your top friends and probably charge you for any calls through it.

@gemcosta: I did. It’s a trade-off, though. You sacrifice caller-ID for unlimited minutes. You can then use google voice to screen your calls (it has a nice system for that).

@Styyl: This seems to be an issue over many Gawker sites this morning, there are broken image links all over the place on Lifehacker, Kotaku, Gizmodo and other places.

Has anyone been able to register with SipGate recently? I spent a couple hours trying, only to never receive the confirmation SMS code.

I’m using a prepaid TMobile phone, and wondering if that’s the issue, or is it something else?

I’m surprised I hadn’t thought about simply adding my Google Voice number as one of my “faves” on my T-Mobile plan.

Great tips though [good thing text isn't broken] I’ve been trying to figure out a nice way to send text with my google number, so nice.

    GVNotifier.net, son: [lifehacker.com]

It’s great. Paired with a free softphone (xlite) and either SipGate or Gizmo5 – free phone where-ever you have internet.

Get a data plan only on your device and you have internet, voice, and text for the price of data only.
