The iPad’s screen is relatively low resolution, just 1,024 x 768 pixels. If you’re watching a moves in widescreen with letterboxing, these screenshots from the A-Team trailer from Apple.com make it clear there’s little difference. When zoomed in, however… More »

You’re probably better off watching movies on, oh say, a 55″ LCD then on your cell phone. Oh wait, does this iPad cell phone take calls?

@Monty: I always thought a widescreen iPad was a great idea. 4:3 is great for web pages but for media I definitely prefer a widescreen format.

The iPad should never be a video-watching first choice for any. 4:3 and a low resolution just goes to show that actual video standards, such as 16:9, Blu-Ray, and 1280×768 are not top priority for revolutionary and magical devices. Stick with the 720p laptop for movies.

@quasistellar:
Imagine what Nintendo could do if they got ahold of this technology!
Kerfudle: Your a Kerf!
@Monty: Where would it have been advertised as having 768 lines but without saying it’s 4:3? A lot of movies aren’t 1:1.66 anyway. Should they have made it 1:2.35? What about a 2.2.4 cinemascope edition?

@WWSJD: me too (the not seeing an iPad part) didn’t see many droids it’s first day though
I would have thought that the 500,000 sold would mean a few in my adventures

Do you watch the videos on your iPad with a magnifier or something? Low resolution videos on my iPad doesn’t bother me, even my YouTube Channel have 1080p and it looks fine.
Lilkiwiguy87
@WWSJD: Where would you take your iPad? That’s like saying you don’t see many airplanes on the interstate, so they’re must not be too many of them.
Duffasaurus
@tucker: It’s a device made by…
Oh, I see what you did there.

I can watch movies on my iPud? No way!
Nurburgring
@tucker: An iPod that lost its vowel and had to go to an Indian guy that can’t speak english for a replacement…
Nurburgring
@WWSJD: Funny… I’ve seen one up here in Toronto. Where it isn’t out.

@Monty: It was written by Jesus, so, naturally, it’s sensationalized and terrible.
Duffasaurus
@David Hildreth: When you advertise a product as having 768 lines of resolution some might stupidly believe that is 720p compatible. In a 4 by 3 resolution, that is not the case – so a widescreen would dramatically improve matters.
Monty
@Monty: Exactly. That post was terrible.
The Lab
@Monty: It wouldn’t be stupid for watching widescreen movies, just for everything else.
Stetrain
@quasistellar: If from a high quality source, the difference isn’t as big as people would like to think.
David Hildreth
I still have yet to see an ipad in real life. for all the hype and pre launch coverage you think this device would be everywhere. Day one of the droid launch i saw a dozen, apparently the cult is keeping these locked up in the tabernacle.
WWSJD
@Monty: A widescreen aspect ratio wouldn’t necessarily mean higher pixel density.
David Hildreth
It’s the same concept as buying a 32″ 1080p TV. Just because the display is capable of presenting content in a particular resolution, it doesn’t mean it will look any better. Screen size plays just as critical a role as resolution.

What’s an iPad?
tucker
4:3 video… haha!
wozburger
@quasistellar: Revolutionary!
2010-Camaro
I’ve been using handbrakes “high profile” setting and dropping the res down to 1024 for my 72op content. Works great and the movies are only about 1.2gb after a half hour encode.
Reduced ooooo, ooooooooooooooooooo
Now, this was the same site telling us that a widescreen version of the iPad would be stupid, right?

No biggy. Just checking.
Monty
Apple makes 480p look like 720p!
Magical!

And yet people drool over this needless gadget Sorry, but this is a miss.
