You’re probably better off watching movies on, oh say, a 55″ LCD then on your cell phone. Oh wait, does this iPad cell phone take calls?

@Monty: I always thought a widescreen iPad was a great idea. 4:3 is great for web pages but for media I definitely prefer a widescreen format.

The iPad should never be a video-watching first choice for any. 4:3 and a low resolution just goes to show that actual video standards, such as 16:9, Blu-Ray, and 1280×768 are not top priority for revolutionary and magical devices. Stick with the 720p laptop for movies.

@Monty: Where would it have been advertised as having 768 lines but without saying it’s 4:3? A lot of movies aren’t 1:1.66 anyway. Should they have made it 1:2.35? What about a 2.2.4 cinemascope edition?

I would have thought that the 500,000 sold would mean a few in my adventures

Do you watch the videos on your iPad with a magnifier or something? Low resolution videos on my iPad doesn’t bother me, even my YouTube Channel have 1080p and it looks fine.

@WWSJD: Where would you take your iPad? That’s like saying you don’t see many airplanes on the interstate, so they’re must not be too many of them.

@David Hildreth: When you advertise a product as having 768 lines of resolution some might stupidly believe that is 720p compatible. In a 4 by 3 resolution, that is not the case – so a widescreen would dramatically improve matters.

I still have yet to see an ipad in real life. for all the hype and pre launch coverage you think this device would be everywhere. Day one of the droid launch i saw a dozen, apparently the cult is keeping these locked up in the tabernacle.

@Monty: A widescreen aspect ratio wouldn’t necessarily mean higher pixel density.

It’s the same concept as buying a 32″ 1080p TV. Just because the display is capable of presenting content in a particular resolution, it doesn’t mean it will look any better. Screen size plays just as critical a role as resolution.

I’ve been using handbrakes “high profile” setting and dropping the res down to 1024 for my 72op content. Works great and the movies are only about 1.2gb after a half hour encode.

Now, this was the same site telling us that a widescreen version of the iPad would be stupid, right?
